The spring is the fastest growth period for Japanese knotweed and it can spread very quickly. Look out for red/purple new shoots emerging from the ground, similar to asparagus spears. At this stage the leaves will be rolled up around the shoot and may be red or burnt green in colour. The leaves will start to unfurl and will change to green in colour. Over spring the plant may grow up to 3 meters. The canes will have a characteristic pattern of purple speckles and the leaves will from a distinctive zig-zag pattern on the canes.
