Head of Ecology

MSc MCIEEM

Nicholas is an Ecologist with extensive project management experience. He has experience of leading on ecological inputs for multiple habitats and species inputs for small to large scale (2,000+ proposed units). He has expertise in Extended Phase 1 surveys, Phase 2 surveys for protected species and report writing, which includes Ecological Impact Assessment and ecology chapters for Environmental Statements. He had responsibility for leading a Bat Team within his previous role.

Nicholas has a Master of Science (MSc) in Conservation and Biodiversity with the University of Exeter and is a Full Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (MCIEEM) having achieved Earned Recognition. He is published as a co-author in a journal on bats and lighting with the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

Nicholas holds Natural England Class Licences for bats, barn owl and great crested newt. He is one of a small number of ecologists who is a Registered Consultant under the ‘low impact’ Bat Mitigation Class Licence (BMCL). He has been the Named for many full bat EPS development licences with Natural England comprising nine species: common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, brown long-eared, Natterer’s, Daubenton’s, whiskered, Brandt’s, lesser horseshoe and greater horseshoe bats. Additionally, he has registered sites under BMCL and been a Named Ecologist for a bat EPS development licence with Natural Resources Wales for a noctule tree roost.

One of the licences that Nicholas has been Named Ecologist for was for a nationally significant roost of lesser horseshoe bats. The mitigation comprised retained sections of a cellar of an 18th Century Grade II* listed house, which has been linked with a bespoke subterranean ‘bat cave’ and tunnels. The project required a solution-focused approach to realise a complex bat mitigation project. He was invited to deliver a presentation on this project at the Mitigation Case Studies Forum 2017.
