Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is a global event to highlight the importance of protecting the environment. Created in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a US senator and environmentalist, and Denis Hayes, a graduate student at Harvard University. This followed an environmental disaster that resulted in a large oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara, California.

This year’s focus is the fight against plastics. It aims for a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.

The Earth Day organisation provides a platform to share knowledge and tips on how everyone can have their ‘say’ in this common fight.

At ACD Environmental we aim to:

  • Propose only plastic-free accessories on planting schemes such as recyclable/ reusable tree guard shelters and natural material hessian tree ties.
  • Choose where possible for planting that is root balled instead of containerised, which is usually made from plastic.
  • Consider alternative materials to outdoor equipment, such as benches made from plastic and other debris that wash up along our coastlines; and
  • Advocate for the use of natural materials instead of other highly costly environmental artificial solutions, as is the case of plastic, rubber, and concrete.

So, what can we as individuals do? We can reduce the use of non-sustainable materials, choose locally sourced materials and products instead, reuse materials wherever possible, choose recycled materials and recycle.
